Cheek Augmentation

High cheekbones are often associated with beauty and femininity, while a deficient cheek structure can cause your face to look gaunt and heavy. Cheekbone implants (cheek augmentation) can create the appearance of higher, more prominent cheekbones and better facial balance. The cheekbone (malar bone) can be enhanced or augmented using an implant placed through a small incision inside the mouth.

Here at Florida Oral & Facial Surgical Associates, we’ve seen many patients across Daytona Beach, Palm Coast, New Smyrna Beach and the surrounding areas to who wanted to enhance their cheek structure with implants. How is Cheek Augmentation Performed?

Cheek augmentation, also known as malar augmentation, begins with a small incision either on the inside of the mouth on the upper lip or on the lower eyelid. Through these incisions, Dr. Schalit will be able to create a pocket between the cheekbones and their overlying soft tissue. Dr. Schalit will then place the cheek implants into those pockets and either suture them in place or allow your body to naturally form a capsule around it.

Am I a Good Candidate for Cheek Augmentation?

Both men and women can benefit from cheek augmentation. Many of the patients that we see are older individuals who have lost some fat and soft tissue in the cheek area due to aging, and want to “plump” that area back up. Also, patients who have lost a significant amount of weight, which has caused their face to appear “hollow,” may be good candidates for this procedure as well. If you have very thin skin, prominent bone structure or a history of immune deficiency, you may not be a good candidate for this surgery. Your doctor will discuss your medical history with you during your initial consultation.

What Kind of Post-Operative Cheek Augmentation Care Can I Expect?

Your recovery period will depend on this type of surgical approach used and whether or not you had other procedures performed at the same time. But in general, cheek augmentation patients usually return to their normal activities within five to seven days. Your upper lip may have a numb sensation for several hours, but this will dissipate. And prescription pain medication will be provided to manage any discomfort. If your cheek augmentation incision was made through the mouth, you may be placed on a diet of only soft foods until your gums are fully healed. And to keep the area clean, you’ll need to rinse your mouth out after eating.

What are the Typical Results of Cheek Augmentation?

Following cheek augmentation surgery, most patients are very happy with their fuller, prominent cheekbones. Their aged, gaunt appearance is replaced with a more proportional, beautiful and youthful facial structure. Also, depending on the method of incision, there is generally no detectable scars.
