In Loving Memory of John O. Akers, D.D.S.
Dr. John Akers was a pioneer, a healer, and a man whose life’s work changed thousands of others for the better. A forerunner in the field of dental implantology, he entered private practice in 1981 and quickly became known for his groundbreaking expertise. He was the first oral surgeon in Florida to perform the simultaneous maxillary and mandibular Teeth in an Hour procedure, an achievement that reflected not only his skill, but his unrelenting commitment to advancing patient care. Throughout his career, he partnered closely with the area’s top dentists to deliver same-day teeth solutions, setting a standard of excellence that continues to shape the specialty today.
Born and raised in Daytona Beach, Dr. Akers knew from the time he was just five years old that he was called to be a doctor. That purpose guided his life’s path, one rooted in compassion, service, and an unwavering desire to help people. After earning his Bachelor of Science from Presbyterian College, he went on to complete his Doctor of Dental Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia’s School of Dentistry. His training continued with an internship at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center, followed by dual residencies in pediatric dentistry and oral & maxillofacial surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina. He later became board certified by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, a testament to his mastery and dedication.
Outside the operating room, Dr. Akers was a true outdoorsman. He found joy in hunting, fishing, and exploring the world alongside the people he loved most, his family. His curiosity, sense of adventure, and deep appreciation for nature brought balance to a life devoted to caring for others.
Dr. Akers will be remembered not only for his remarkable professional achievements, but for the kindness, steadiness, and heart he brought to every interaction. He changed smiles, restored confidence, and reminded us all what it means to live with purpose. His impact will continue to be felt by his patients, his colleagues, and the community he served so faithfully. May his memory be a blessing and may the legacy he built continue to inspire for generations to come.
