Chemical Peels

Florida Oral & Facial Surgical Associates offers chemical peels to patients in Daytona Beach, Palm Coast, New Smyrna Beach, Titusville, Deltona, Port Orange and Ormond Beach, FL.

As we age, it gets more and more important to take a proactive role in our skin care. And chemical peels are a wonderful and effective treatment to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots and any other imperfections. Using an acid solution that is "painted" onto the skin, chemical peels remove the skin's outer layer, effectively exfoliating it. This, in turn, promotes new cell growth and restores that healthy, glowing complexion that we all want.

How are Chemical Peels Performed?

There are several different “levels” of chemical peels, so the procedure may vary slightly depending on the degree of peel you choose. For example, deeper peels require anesthesia while lighter ones do not. However, all procedures take place right here in our office, and they all involve applying the chemical solution to the treatment area. This solution works to remove the outer layers of the skin and stimulate new cell growth.

Superficial chemical peels should be repeated weekly for four to six weeks and then maintained by going once a month. Medium-depth peels should be repeated every six to 12 months. And deep chemical peels requires little to no follow up, as the results can last for up to 10 years.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Chemical Peel?

If you are unhappy with any of the following, you may be a good candidate for chemical peels:

  • Fine lines
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Light freckling and scarring (due to acne)
  • Scaly patches and rough skin
  • Brown spots or sun damage on the face or scalp

Not everyone is a candidate for this treatment, however. If you have deep facial lines, sagging skin, significant scarring or broken capillaries, a chemical peel would not be sufficient to treat them. Also, those patients with red hair and pale, freckled skin, Afro-Caribbean or Asian skin, facial warts, abnormal pigmentation or a history of skin scarring may not be suitable candidates either. Your skin care technician will discuss all of this with you at your initial consultation.

What Kind of Post-Operative Chemical Peel Care Can I Expect?

Depending upon the level of chemical peel you have chosen, recovery time and after care may differ. Following a superficial chemical peel, your skin may appear pink and have some white blotches, which will fade in a couple of hours. You can also expect some flaking of the skin to last for a few days. Aside from that, you'll be able to resume normal activities immediately.

A medium-depth or deep peel, on the other hand, may present some more side effects. Your skin will be red and swollen for about 24 hours, and it's common to feel some tightness, so you should apply petroleum jelly several times a day to prevent cracking. When washing your face, simply use water and no soap. Your doctor may prescribe ointments, creams, oral steroids and dressings to treat any severe reactions.

Whatever you do, do not pick at your skin after a chemical peel, as this could cause scarring. And always apply a high SPF before going outside to prevent any further sun damage.

What are the Typical Results of Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are highly effective in improving the overall look of the skin. One their imperfections are removed, our patients report a youthful and glowing complexion. But of course, the results vary depending on the level of peel you choose. To determine which peel is most appropriate for you, we suggest browsing some chemical peel before and after photos.

What are Chemical Peel Costs?

Chemical peel costs vary based on the depth of the peel you choose. And if you're still not sure which one is right for you, we suggest setting up a one-on-one consultation with one of our highly trained and experienced skin care technicians. They will discuss your specific goals and come up with a treatment plan that suits you.
